Before installing sod, itโs important to determine how much you need to avoid under-ordering or overspending. At Long Island Sod Company, we make it easy to calculate the right amount of sod for your project. Use this guide to measure your lawn and estimate your sod requirements.
Step 1: Measure Your Lawn Area
To determine how much sod you need, measure the total square footage of your lawn. Hereโs how:
For Square or Rectangular Lawns:
๐ Measure the length and width of your lawn in feet.
๐ Multiply the two numbers: Length ร Width = Total Square Feet
For Circular Lawns:
๐ Measure the distance from the center of the lawn to the edge (radius).
๐ Use the formula: 3.14 ร (Radius ร Radius) = Total Square Feet
For Irregularly Shaped Lawns:
๐ Break the area into smaller squares or rectangles. Measure each section separately and add them together.
๐ If in doubt, send us your measurements and weโll help calculate your sod needs!
Step 2: Account for Extra Sod
We recommend ordering 5-10% extra sod to account for cutting, shaping, and waste during installation.
โ
Example: If your lawn measures 1,000 sq. ft., order 1,050-1,100 sq. ft. of sod.
Step 3: Understand Sod Pricing & Delivery
- Sod is typically sold by the square foot or pallet (one pallet covers about 500-600 sq. ft.).
- Bulk discounts are available for large projects.
- We offer fast sod delivery across Long Island!
Step 4: Preparing for Installation
- Remove old grass and weeds before laying new sod.
- Level the ground and apply starter fertilizer for healthy root growth.
- Install sod as soon as it arrives to prevent drying out.
